We all have our own opinions and perspectives. The Gaylords see themselves as
having something in common with the American Indian. This is not just the fact
that they have quite a few American Indians as members. The American Indians were
unyielding in battle and they were in constant battle with new settlers and
their armies through the 1700-1900s. The American Indians were trying to defend
their lands from an invasion of people of different ideas, cultures, languages
and other ways of living.
The Indian warriors were historically fearsome on the
battlefields as they tried to gallantly defend their lands and people. The Indians
were unable to cope with the overwhelming numbers of the settlers. Sadly, they
lost their lands one by one. This is how the Gaylords see their struggle.
As other ethnic cultures and races expanded to the Northside of Chicago, the
majority of whites and other races who were not part of the new breed coming
through, just like the American Indians, headed for the mountains or better
ground. This better ground usually turned out to be the suburbs of Chicago.
The Gaylords usually came from families who were unable to just pack up and
leave like the others due to poverty or other lack of opportunities. The
Gaylords felt that they were youths, not just white youths, but American
youths that bonded together to fight for the defense of their situation and
pure survival on the streets of Chicago. They felt like they were the grunts
of a micro society, as the larger society in general seemed not to care or
understand their plight, that had no choice but to defend against the
impending invasion. The incoming, almost pure ethnic gangs, seem to say to
them "Hey, we like what's yours and we want it". The Gaylords seemed to be
saying back, "Its ours! You want it?!?! Lets roll, lets do this!".
Many people may look at this from their comfortable homes across America and say, "Why didn't they just run and leave?" or "Land or turf is not worth
dying for". That's like telling the Palestine people to leave Israel. For this is not just about land. It's about heritage, honor and pride. And it's their home. America
sends people off to war to fight for all kinds of things. Many people will argue that it's for oil or money. Just because the Gaylords are not part of the bigger
world picture does not mean that their war is not justified. As a matter of fact, the Gaylords believe that there was no choice but to fight, as the
invasion was upon them. The Gaylords fought hard and well but they lost many lives trying to defeat armies of unlimited numbers. Just like the American Indians,
they lost lands, or sets, one by one. To the invading armies or gangs the Gaylords appeared to be a mostly white gang with racial views, but this is not
the truth. Yes, the Gaylords were mostly white and many of these members had white pride, but they never denied their other members of ethnic culture and
racial heritage their rights of their pride, for they looked at them as true established americans. Many say that the Gaylords lost their numbers because
of no recruitment. The Gaylords feel they recruited all they could and it was hard, as I said before, since many of their neighbors took off for the
suburbs. The Gaylords also say that you can't recruit from the surrounding area around your neighborhood or set as most likely this is where the invading
gangs have already established themselves, and once they have established, how do you get a messenger out to get recruits when you're under siege?
Like the american indians, the Gaylords have fought viciously. To them in battle it's all about the man next to you. Sadly, they have lost many of their sets,
not because of the enemy gangs, but due to the entire race or culture that the invasion brings with it.
The older, retired Gaylords wish that they did not have to go through what
they went through but, at the time, they did not realize that there was more
to life because they had not seen it. An older Gaylord once said, "It was all about the nation. We never cared
about or thought about anything else in our lives. We just marched, fought and
said 'f__k it'".
